These were all questions that fans already knew the answers to so it’s understandable that he was requested not to ask them again by 1D’s management team. They weren’t being difficult, they were just trying to make the radio host think of some fresh and new questions to ask. However, the radio host was angry that he had been given the list and decided to show this once he was on the phone to Zayn. He said: ‘Hi Zayn, you’re a very busy guy. I want to talk to you but I can’t do that… no X Factor, no pranks… Well, that’s about going to do it. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us and continued success for the future.’ Then he hung up on him without asking a single question. It was a strange reaction, as lots of One Direction fans had been looking forward to hearing the interview.

A recording of the phone call quickly went viral but rather than criticising the radio host, the media decided to criticise Zayn instead and he received a barrage of abuse. He explained to Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1 in a later interview: ‘The reason she [the press team member] was saying you can’t ask these questions is because of the fans.

‘They want to hear some new things; they want to know what’s going on. They don’t want to hear the same things over and over again. We always get asked the same questions so we just thought we’d mix it up a bit and try and rule out a few questions so we get some new ones.’

Zayn never wanted to be false with his fans and was always keen to give honest answers in interviews: he wanted them to understand what made him tick. When he learned that a 3D documentary movie titled This Is Us was to be released in August 2013, he was delighted. He wanted fans to be able to see what it was like to be in One Direction, to catch a glimpse of the boys’ lives behind the scenes as they travelled the world. As he explained to Heat magazine in February 2013: ‘It’s just going to be the stuff you don’t get to see – the day-to-day waking up in the morning, actually travelling.’

The movie’s director was the American independent filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who up until this point had been most famous for his documentary movie, Super Size Me (2004), which saw him eat three McDonald’s meals a day for thirty days to study the effect it had on his body. Spurlock was thrilled to be chosen, telling the press in November 2012: ‘This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band. To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.’

Simon Cowell added: ‘I’m delighted we’re making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it’s like to be One Direction today.
